Procedure (34-44 minutes)
Show students a set of questions. Ask them to answer the questions about their lives. When is your birthday? When did you go to school? When did you start your job?
Teacher provides students with a list of sentences of events done at specific times. These sentences are out of order. Teacher instructs students to put the sentences in the correct order from left to right. Answers are then checked in open class. Answer: 1. I was born on July 4th, 1989. 2. I started going to school in the 1990s. 3. I started learning English in 2010. 4. I started my new job last year. 5. I got married in June. 6. I went to Canada last Monday. 7. I came back home on Saturday.
Teacher draws students attention to the time phrase parts of the sentences. Teacher asks students what periods of time are covered by these sentences and notes them on the Jamboard. Periods of time: Years Months Days of the week Dates
Meaning Teacher shows another Jamboard, this time with only the specific time phrases from the previous activity. Teacher instructs students that they should sort them into two categories: time periods and specific dates. After sorting, teacher then asks students to notice what specific words are used in each category. Teacher should devote time to covering the phrase "last ______" and demonstrates the meaning using a calendar. Teacher elicits from students what "last year" and "last month" might mean. Teacher also uses the calendar as an opportunity to ask CCQs regarding the meaning "on" and "in" Pronunciation Teacher again shows the students the students the phrases from earlier. Teacher asks students what are the most important pieces of information in these time phrases. Teacher elicits what we should do when we are saying an important piece of information in the text (answer: we should stress it). Teacher drills pronunciation. Form Teacher shows students a set of rules for when we should use "in", "on", and "last." Teacher asks students to fill out the set of rules by themselves. After doing so, teacher then checks students' understanding of the grammar rules.
Teacher shares a Google form with the students (TP8 Controlled Practice). Teacher instructs students to select the appropriate choice for the sentence. Teacher mentions that some sentences may have more than one answer. After giving 2-3 minutes to practice, teacher checks the answers with the students. Answers: 1. in 2. on 3. 0 4. in 5. in, last 6. last 7. on, last
The teacher shows students a list of discussion prompts. Teacher informs students that they will be put in pairs or groups and will share their answers to the prompts with each other. Teacher encourages students to ask each other at least one follow-up question to each statement. Teacher puts students into pairs or groups (depending on the size of the class) and has them do the free practice with each other. Afterward, teacher does delayed error correction if necessary.
