The lesson is going to start with a game in which every student should guess a number then a famous place will appear and they should imagine they will go there. This will be followed by a text about Edward Murphy and his laws. Then there will be some controlled practice through a gap-filling exercise. Finally, there will be free practice via a speaking activity.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of first conditional in the context of daily situation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I embark on the lesson with a real story about myself and then a game designed in PPP, it consists of numbers and photos SS should guess a number, and as I click the number a photo will appear on the screen. SS should try to imagine they are in that city of that place and talk about it in two sentences first one in the present tense and the second one in the future. I will give feedback about their answers.

Exposure (6-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will give a text from page 62 of AEF to SS, they have 5 minutes to read and answer part C of the book individually . I will check their understanding with some CCQs Which part do you have to answer? part C How much time do you have ? 5 minutes. Are you going to do the exercise in groups or individually? individually. which page ? page 62

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I illustrate the marked section: if you go the Paris, you will visit the Eiffel Tower.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning of the first conditional to the students; which is that we use it to talk about possible things in the future; by using some eliciting questions: Do these sentences talk about the present or the future? the future. Does the if clause talk about things that are possible or certain? possible. Then I will clarify the form of the first conditional; which is if + present simple, future simple; also use eliciting questions: Which verb form is in the if clause? present simple. Which verb form is in the main clause? future simple. Is the if clause always first in the sentence? no, we can replace it with the main clause. Finally, I will clarify the pronunciation of the first conditional sentences. I will tell the student that when we start with the if clause, we say it using raising intonation the falling intonation on the main clause. Also, I will tell them that the stress is on the main clause and I will ask them to practice saying some sentences again to make sure they can say right.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will give the students a controlled practice exercise (page 140) to make sure they understand the form correctly. I will give them a gap-filling exercise. They will work in pairs to do the exercise. I will ask some ICQs to check their understanding of the task. Work in pairs to fill in the gaps with the correct form of the verb in brackets, You have 5 minutes: -Are you going to work individually or in pairs? In pairs. - Is it a gap-filling or multiple choice? gap filling - How long is the exercise? 8 minutes

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will give Ss a speaking exercise to practice fluency using the first conditional. I will give them some questions about different situations and ask them how they will react in these situations. I will ask them to work in pairs asking and answering the questions. -Work in pairs to ask and answer the following questions, one of the pairs will ask and the other will answer, the you will replace the seats. the answer should be using the first conditional. you have 6 minutes.
