Procedure (33-45 minutes)
- Display pictures of some people who need help. - Ask Ss to imagine that you are on your way to the course today, and they are passing by these people. - Ask Ss: "Do these people need help?" Ss allegedly answer: "Yes" - Ask Ss to work in pairs and ask each other this question: "What will you do?" - Ask s of couple of pairs about what their partner will do in such situations.
Display examples of the two phrases "give someone a lift" & "pick someone up" accompanied with pictures showing the difference between their meanings. Ask Ss to think about the difference between their meanings in pairs. Nominate Ss to get feedback. Ask CCQs to check their understanding; To give someone a lift: (phrase) to take/drive someone to someplace. CCQs: When you give a friend a lift: *Do you offer them a ride? *Do you drive to someplace reach them? *Do you take them from the same place where you are? To pick someone up: (phrasal verb) to go to someplace to collect/get someone. CCQs: When you pick a friend up *Do you drive to someplace to reach/get them? *Do you take them from the same place where you are? Model and drill. Display their written form and definition on the slide. Highlight stressed words.
Ask Ss to fill gaps in “Task 1” HO1 from the recording T7.4. Monitor and check Ss’s answers. Ask Ss to listen again and check their answers. Monitor again and check what might be points of struggling for Ss. Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. Show the “Answer Key” on the PPT.
Ask Ss to answer “Task 2” in HO2 in pairs. Monitor and check Ss’s answers. Nominate Ss from some pairs to answer a question. Give instant feedback if all Ss answer a question wrong. Ask Ss CCQs to check their understading: Drill the two sentences. Write them on the board. Highlight phonological features.
Ask Ss to answer “Task 3” in HO 3 individually. Monitor and check Ss’s answers. Ask Ss to check their answers in pairs. Show the “Answer Key” on the PPT.
Ss work in groups of 4. Give each group a set of prompt cards that has situations such as “I’ve forgotten my pen”. One by one Ss draw a card, read the problem then the “listeners” have to respond with an offer/instant decision. Monitor and check Ss’ use of TL
