In this lesson students learn the argumentative essay , and its layout through different examples related to real life.

Main Aims

  • To provide the students with the keys and information for how to write an argumentative essay using a topic , thesis statement , introduction , body and then the conclusion.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide the students with the suitable vocabulary in order to improve their fluency in speaking and writing for the argumentative essay.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks the students to look at the power point and elicit the picture. " School Uniform" Teacher asks the students if they were still at school would they prefer to wear a school uniform or not? why? Students work in pairs writing their point of view. Teacher monitors and checks their understanding.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening an argumentative essays about school uniform.

Teacher draws students. attention to the writing argumentative essay and its title. Teacher reads the argumentative text and explains the topic " School uniform" Teacher elaborates and discusses the introduction. Teacher elicits from the students the " Thesis statement and its role"

Useful Language (2-2 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Students learn new different vocabulary while reading the different argumentative texts. Teacher explains what is meant by " Thesis statement " , " counter argument "

Productive Task(s) (2-3 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Teacher asks the students to take different parts of an argumentative essay about " Facebook" and then to reorder each in different groups according the argumentative essay lay out. Teacher checks their understanding. Teacher asks the students to fill in the missing linker for another argumentative essay about " mobile phones " Teacher checks their understanding.

Feedback and Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Teacher asks the students to play an on line game called bamboozle about covering the argumentative essay layout and description. Teacher checks their understanding.
