Description

In this lesson students will be able to speak about what to do and what not to do in the context of social customs. They will be exposed to a model text (listening) and will be listening twice for gist and for detail.

Main Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a converstaion in the context of social customs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about what to do and what not to do in different countries in the context of social customs

Procedure

Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

1. Greet the students. 2. Divide them into two groups. 3. Ask them to take a couple of slips (countries cards) and choose one student from each group to represent it. 4. This student should face the board when the other members see the name of the country. 5. All group members have to help their representative to guess the name of the country by giving them information about it without mentioning the name of the country or the language in 30 seconds only. 6. Each group will play 3 times with different representative. 7. The wining group is the one with the highest score. 8. Demo with them one country only. 9. Ask them (as a content feedback and to set the context): Are these countries similar or different? (different).

Exposure (10-12 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

A. Listen (for gist): Pre-teach: - (romantic) date (n) - split the bill (v) - social custom (n) 1. Listen to 8 people talk about their about social customs in their country. 2. Each person will talk about one topic from this box (point at exercise 1 in the HO). 3. Take note while you are listening. ICQs: - How many people are you going to listen to? (8) - Which topics they’ll talk about? (the topics in the box) 4. Now, first read the names of people and the topic in the box before you listen. 5. Play the 1st audio track. 6. Stop the track and give students time to answer and check with their partner. 7. Ask them to share their answers and show them the answer on the board. 8. Play the 2nd audio track then the 3rd and so on. (Pause the recording after each extract to give students time to make a few notes and to compare their ideas in pairs). (Monitor that they are on the task). 9. Check answers with the whole class. 10. Give Feedback. (Answer Key): Amy: behavior between the sexes. Pawel: how you greet and address people. Rosa: being late. Ian: smoking. Dong-Min: typical times for going out/ eating. Lee Kuan: the way people dress. Ramon: typical times for going out/ eating. Khalid: behavior between the sexes and what people do when they go out. B. Listen (for details): 1. Listen again to the same 8 people and complete the missing parts (point at exercise 2 in the HO) with phrases (not one word). ICQs: - Are you going to listen to different people? (No). - Are you going to answer with one word only? (No, with phrases). NOTE: the sentences aren't in the same order of the tracks. So, read first and then listen to the track. 2. Demo no. 1 with them. 3. Pause the recording after each extract to allow students time to write the missing phrases. 4. Play the recording again, if necessary, rather than giving the answers yourself. 5. When they finish. Let them do a pair check. 6. Give feedback. (Answer Key): a. Productive Task(s) (13-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

1. In two groups ask them to write tips for a foreigner friend coming to Egypt. 2. Give them 3 minutes to prepare. 3. Model. 4. Role play: one is a foreigner friend, the other is an Egyptian friend giving tips. 5. Content and Linguistic feedback.
