Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of past simple in the context of holiday

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of holiday

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I start talking about my last weekend and the way I spent it. I use some past simple verbs in my speech.

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to tell me about the things they did last weekend. They may use simple present tense in their talks and I don't correct them on the spot.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of the sentences that my students have made on the board in the correct form.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board to clarify the case that this tense is used in. We will focus on the form by asking the students to find out about the rolls of the words. Sentence stress will be covered at the end.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do the exercise on page 140, part a individually. They have 4 minutes to do it and after that they will have 2 minutes to check in pairs. At the end we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will have 10 minutes to talk about last summer. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end.
