Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of quantifiers in the context of cities of the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about Zurich in the context of best cities in the world
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about quantifiers in the context of their favourite city

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Share G-jamboard link. Show the question: What is the best city in the world? Ask students to think about what makes it the best city. Have students share and write their answers on a sticker.

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Listen for gist Tell students that the person in the picture is Stuart, who believes Zurich is the best city in the world. Ask the students to listen to Stuart's reasons and answer the question on the board. Have the students share their answers in pairs, if necessary, open BOR's then ask students to share their answers in OC. answers: Does Stuart think the city is beautiful? yes Do you have to drive a lot in Zurich? no Are many places open late now? yes

Highlighting (4-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Listen for detail Ask students to go to the slide with their name in G-jamboard. Ask students to listen to the recording one more time. This time, ask them to complete the sentences with the stickers on the screen. Have the students check their answers in pairs before checking them in OC. Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

For M: In OC, ask students to match the sentences with the pictures on the screen. Request their reasoning to choose a picture. F: Explain to students that quantifiers go next to a noun, but not all the quantifiers can go next to any noun. Ask students to identify the noun and to think if the noun is countable or uncountable, then check the box corresponding to the quantifier. Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Share the g-forms link with students. Ask them to choose the correct answer in 3 to 5 minutes, but do not submit the task. Then, ask students to check their answers in pairs. Ask students to submit. Lastly, check student's answers in OC.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask students to think or write about 3-5 sentences about their favorite city in the world, using quantifiers. As a suggestion, they can use the characteristics they mentioned at the beginning of the lesson. Model the examples. The sentences can be positive or negative. Give them a minute or two to think about it, then ask them to share their answers in OC. DEC if necessary
