Description

In this lesson, students will practice speaking for fluency using generalizations and exceptions. Students will read a text from the course book for gist and to gain comprehension focusing on particular phrases used for generalizing and in cases of exception.

Materials

Abc Videos, computer, smart screen, whiteboard, colored markers

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shows Ss a picture on the computer. T asks Ss what they can see. Teacher elicits as many words and phrases related to the topic as he can. Teacher asks students to discuss in pairs some questions related to the topic. Students report to the teacher about their colleagues. Teacher asks students to guess what they are going to talk about. Teacher gives feedback without revealing the topic.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Teacher asks students to read the gist questions silently. Teacher gives students 5 minutes to read the text and find the answers for the questions. Teacher then gives students more detailed questions. Teacher tells students thst they are going to read again to find the answers for these questions. Teacher gives feedback.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Teacher asks students some questions to elicit the sentences highlighting the TL. Teacher asks students to underline these sentences in the text. Teacher asks two students to write the sentences on the board. Teacher asks students to elicit the rule from the examples.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Teacher asks Ss to work in pairs to try to guess the form. Teacher takes feedback from students. Teacher asks questions to elicit the meaning of the TL from ss. Teacher checks the meaning asking CCQs. Teacher drills the TL with students to check pronunciation. Teacher highlights the TL on the board to check the form. Teacher asks some students to recap on the TL to check overall understanding.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Teacher divides the class into pairs. Teacher asks students to work in pairs to answer the controlled practice questions number 2 and 3 in the student's book. Teacher asks the different pairs to check their answers. Teacher gives feedback.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Teacher divides the class into pairs. Teacher asks students to work in pairs to answer the controlled practice question number 4 in the student's book. Teacher asks the different pairs to check their answers. Teacher gives feedback.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Teacher divides the class into pairs. Teacher asks students to work in pairs to create a dialogue or a piece of writing using the TL. Teacher asks students to act out their dialogue taking turns. Teacher asks the other groups to assess and evaluate the dialogues of their peers. Teacher gives final feedback. Teacher recaps the lesson.
