Description

In this lesson, students will practice mainly their listening skills, while also learning new vocabulary, practicing pronunciation and speaking.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice using a text about New York and American Life in the context of Big cities and the USA culture
  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about New York and American Life in the context of understanding people's opinions about their life in New York and the US

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy and fluency speaking practice about Life in the big cities in the context of American culture
  • To provide review, clarification and practice in new words that will be developed during the listening activities

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will be shown a video related to the topic as an introduction to the lesson. After this, the topic will be introduced and students will answer a couple of questions regarding the topic.

Pre-Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be introduced to 4 words that will be approached during the listening exercises. For this, they will work in groups to try to find out the meaning, the form, and the phonetics of the words.

Gist (7-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will listen to the audio for the first time and will have to answer 3 open questions. This will be done with the whole class so they can practice their speaking skills as well. Students will talk first and then general feedback will be given

Detailed Listening (8-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

Students will listen to the audio for a second time and will try to fill in the gaps given in different sentences. For this, they will work in groups, and then, general feedback will be given.

Post-Listening (4-6 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

At the end of the lesson, students will be asked about their opinions on the topic seen and will share which each other what they think.
