Description

Learners will read the intriguing newspaper report Climber rescued from dangerous peak about a climber rescued from a mountain ledge in Pakistan where he had been trapped for a week.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice using a text about a climber who was rescued from a mountain ledge in Pakistan in the context of adventure/dangerous activities..

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of specialist vocabulary/technical vocabulary in the context of adventure/dengerous activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Question 1 1. The teacher will ask the students to guess what is the information given and make sure they understand what they are by categorising them. 2. In pairs or small groups the students will try to put the information in the correct rows. 3. The students will then share their answers with the teacher and the teacher will write the correct answers on the board.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Question 2 1. The students will read the bold words and sentences in the text. 2. The teacher will chorally drill with the students. 3. In pairs or small groups, the students will try to figure out the meaning of the bold words and sentences. 4. In pairs or small groups, the students will then work together to match the words/sentences with their correct meanings. 5. The students share their answers with the teacher. The teacher will then write the correct answers on the board. 6. After writing the answers on the board the teacher will then ask CCQs to check their understanding of the vocabulary.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Question 3 1. The students will take a minute to read for gist and to know the general idea of the text. 2. The teacher will then ask the students to share their ideas about the text. The teacher will elicit the targeted language from the student's answers and then write it on the board. 3. The students will then work in pairs or small groups to answer the questions. 4. The students will share their answers with the teacher. 5. The teacher will elicit the targeted language from the student's answers and write on the board.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Question 4 1. The students will read the sentences first. 2. The teacher will then ask CCQs to check their understanding of the sentences. 3. The students will then get back to the text and begin answering the questions. 4. After answering the questions the students will check their answers in pairs or small groups. 5. The students will then share their answers with the teacher and the teacher will write the correct answers on the board.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Question 5 1. The students will get back to the text and try to determine how the writer feels/think of the climber. 2. They will highlight/underline vocabulary that gave them a clue to the writer's thoughts about the climber. The teacher will then ask CCQs to make sure they understand the vocabulary. 3. In pairs or small groups the students will then discuss the second question. 4. After they are finished the teacher will write their ideas on the board and then elicit/expand/reformulate their words to meet the targeted language.
