Main Aims

  • To provide practice of language used for special occasions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of special ocassions
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about special occasions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students a series of pictures Ask students what they think the pictures mean "Please look at the pictures and tell me what is happening in each picture" Do not intervene unless it is necessary to nominate a student.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show students the next slide with the short conversations. Share G-Jamboard link Ask students to read the text and answer the questions. Allow 2 min for this activity. Check answers in OC.

Highlighting (5-7 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

In pairs, students will match the stickers to the pictures "Please go to the slide that has your names on it. With your partner, you will put draw a line from the conversation to the picture you think it should go. Remember to talk to your partner" If necessary, use BOR's for this activity. Allow 3 minutes. Check answers in OC.

Clarification (8-9 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

MFP M: Show students the slide with the meanings of each sentence. Go category by category and ask students first to elicit ideas. Then clarify them by giving examples. "Let's look at these phases. We use congratulations when someone achieves something. Let's pretend today is my graduation; what could you say? (congratulations) We use cheers before we drink Can you think of an example? Elicit new year Let's move to the next one If somebody comes to your party, we use thanks for coming. When you receive a gift, what can you say? (It's lovely, thank you very much) The next category is about our expectations for the future I hope you'll be very happy we can use it when somebody marries. if my friend is sick, I hope you feel better soon is what we use And the last one is about luck before an exam of a game we can say good luck When somebody is going to a new job we can say best of luck in the future ccqs What if S1 is going to travel to Europe? What can we say? If I got a new car what can you say? F: Those are called fix phrases. That means this is how we say them. so we can not change the order of the words because it sounds weird so can I say Best future of luck? (no) You'll be very happy I hope? (yes) but that does not mean the same think P: For pronunciation, it is important to give the right intonation to be happy about it Drill the phrases with the students.

Controlled Practice (8-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ask students to click on the G-form link Show students the activity. Ask them to read the sentence and choose the phase that corresponds to the situation. Ask students to not submit the answers If appropriate, use BORs for students to peer-check their answers Finally, check the answers in OC Answers 1 Congratulation! 2 Cheers! 3 It's lovely; thank you very much 4 Good luck! 5 I hope you feel better soon 6 Thanks for coming

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Show the next slide on G-jamboard. "On the screen are different situations with a partner. Choose one and try to create a conversation using the phrases we learned today" Use BORs if appropriate. Check the answers in OC and provide DEC If time allows, have a second round with different partners.
