Subsidiary Aims
-
To differentiate between the past perfect and simple past tense
Procedure (19-25 minutes)
I will begin by saying that because I woke up later than usual,I had just eaten breakfast before I came to the class. Afterwards I will ask the students this question: What had you done before you came to the class.
I will write one of the students' answers on the board to draw their attention to the past perfect tense.
meaning: I will ask the students to tell me which one of the sentences happened first and then I will add had to the sentence that they say. after that I will write the complete sentence on the board. I will say that we use the past perfect tense to talk about an action that happened before another in the past. I will also say that we use it when we are already talking about a past action and want to talk about an earlier past action. I will also draw a timeline on the board and mark the place that the part of the sentence without "had" happened and mark a place before that for the part of the sentence with "had". form: by pointing at different parts of the sentence, I will elicit the form from the students: subject+had+past participle and I will write the same for negative and question form. pronunciation:I will say and write on the board that had can also be written like 'd in sentences Then, I will write these two sentences on the board: I'd studied before I took the exam. If I studied, I'd pass the exam. I will ask which is had and which is would. and the students will answer and I will correct them If they are wrong.
The students will complete exercises A and B on page 149. i will give feedback if there are any mistakes.
The students will talk about this question in pairs: What are some of the things that you had learned before going to school? I will write their mistakes in my notes and write the correct forms on the board.
