Description

In this lesson Ss will learn the comparatives and superlatives of the adjectives. They will also given chance to practice speaking skill

Materials

Main Aims

  • Main aim is Grammar. Ss will practice superlatives and comparatives using the context of technology.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Secondary aim of this lesson will be speaking. Ss will be taught some of the vocabulary using the superlative and comparative examples

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

A humorous picture (cartoon) picture will be shown to explain the term "smarter", "less intelligent". Ss will be introduced to superlatives and comparative words.

Reading James May's 20th Century (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

Ss will be given a text to read individually from pg. 56 of the student handbook for three minutes and will be asked to highlight the sentences with superlative and comparative adjectives. At the end of reading session they will be asked to share their findings with WC. Teacher will project the words found in the text and compare them with FB from students. After the list of sentences the comparative and superlative words will be highlighted and drilled with pronunciation.

Language Analysis-Teaching Grammar Rules of Comparative and Superlatives (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the rules of Grammar concerning the comparatives and superlatives

With eliciting from Ss, T will create the rules of grammar for comparatives as follows: One syllable adjectives. adj. comparative superlative cheap cheaper cheapest easy easier easiest friendly friendlier friendliest big bigger biggest large larger largest Irregular Adjectives. good better best bad worse worst far farther farthest Ss will also be asked to form sentences with some other adjectives provided in the class. Ss will be drilled on the new words for pronunciation and stress

Fill in blank exercises (8-10 minutes) • To provide a speaking practice for the concepts learned in Grammar.

Ss will be given several exercises to complete in PW. After each exercise, Ss will provide FB and results will be shared with WC. The exercises are as follows: Fill in the blank for: quick, far, not confident, naughty, easy, big, high, difficult, dangerous, good. Rewrite sentence exercise using: bit, far, by, similar, lot If time allows Ss will be asked to form sentences with some other adjectives not mentioned in exercises.

Speaking Practice (8-10 minutes) • To reinforce the concept of comparatives and superlatives using Speaking Skill

T will provide some adjectives on WB and ask students to work in PW to make sentences using these. At the end of session Ss will share their sentences with WC and T will provide FB and make corrections if necessary.

Language Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the grammar rules they learned in this lesson

T will project images of the inventions and technology of the last 100 years. Ss in Groups of 3 will then be asked to write down few of the best and worst inventions and discuss it with their partners. They will be asked to use comparatives and superlatives in their sentences. At the end of GW, they will share their ideas with WC. T will provide FB and make corrections if necessary.
