In this lesson students will practice productive skills, writing in the frame of declining an invitation to an event.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in the frame of productive skills, writing, in the frame of declining an invitation to an event.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students review basic functional language related to expressions for declining an invitation. • Students practice reading for gist when reading sample letter and when correcting peers.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Screen share slide with pictures of events such as weddings, ask students if they like to attend those events, dress up, etc.. or not really.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Share sample letter. Reading for gist: ask students which is the event I have been invited to and the reason I´m giving to decline the event. Task: Identifying parts of letter: Task: Ss will have 1 minute to match the sections of the sample letter. They will have another 1 minute to check with peers, then will give OCF. Answer: 1e 2b, 3d, 4a, 5c B Introduction (reason to write) C Subscription (complimentary close + writer´s name) D Body (explanation) E Salutation /Greetings A Conclusion Meaning: Appropriacy: is this letter formal or informal and why?Answer: it is informal. Some features that make this letter informal are: use of contractions, salutation and close, it is written in an friendly tone and is full of feelings (with love, we would love to attend). Ss review their partner's text using the content checklist and provide feedback about it. 1) Is the email formal or informal? 2) Is it structured / organized well? 3)Is it easy to read? 4)Can you find 2 formal expressions?
