Description

In this lesson, students are going to listen to a conversation between two people who are doing the shopping in different shops and that will lead them to learn how to open up a conversation while buying something.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide detailed and inference listening practice using a text about at the shops in the context of shopping.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of shopping.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this first stage, I'm going to present some questions about shopping to engage the students discuss them in small groups or pairs if the the number of the attendees was few. Then, they tell me what interesting things they might know about their partners.

Pre-Listening (7-9 minutes) • To prepare students for the audio and make it accessible and understandable

The students will be asked to match some vocabulary of items with the suitable shops. e.g. (Lamp>> department store). They are going to do it individually first, then check their answers with a partner and give me the feedback in the end.

While-Listening #1 (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks.

In this stage, the students are going to be shown 3 questions in a blank table and listen to an audio including 2 conversations about people who are shopping to fill out the grid gaps with the information required. They are going to do it individually first then, doing a whole class feedback.

While-Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

The students are going to listen again to the two conversations while having some statements written on the board as well as in their handouts. They will have to reorder these statements individually during listening and check their answers together in a group of three for 3 minutes and come back for the whole class feedback.

Post-Listening (10-15 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

In this last stage of the lesson, the students will have time of 3 minutes to prepare their statements as a sales assistant/ buyer to get involved then in a role-play with their partners in the break-out rooms and practice their roles. Then come back to the main room to start their role-play.
