Description

In this lesson, students practice listening for gist and specific information and end up with a speaking activity. They first start with a lead-in to discuss the difference between a village, a town and a city through three pictures. Then they new words from the text. Next, they practice listening for gist with a matching exercise. After that, they practice speaking for specific information and answer a task. They finish the lesson with a speaking task.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Students will discuss the three pictures of a village, town and city. I will introduce the thee places to them.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll pre-teach new vocabulary: hotel, restaurant, pub, airport. I'll show them pictures and ask them questions, then discuss the word class, read examples then drill pronunciation and highlight the stressed syllable.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students will practice listening for gist. They will listen to the track and match the conversations (a-c) with photos (1-3) I will show them instructions on slides and ask ICQs. They will listen and match. After that we will check the answers together.

While-Listening #2 (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will practice listening for specific information. They will listen to the track again and answer the task individually first then in groups. After that they come for feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will practice speaking for fluency to talk about the three places and what they would prefer to visit. They will work in groups then come back for the main session for feedback. I'll keep monitoring and give them ideas to discuss.
