Aim to expose, clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of wish in the function of regret for the present and future, and hope in the context of desire for present or future outcomes.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Second conditional in the context of whises and hopes
  • To provide practice of Second conditional in the context of wishes and hopes

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, deduction and inference reading practice using a text about Second conditional in the context of wishes and hopes

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context for hopes(desires) and wishes (imposibles) to engage students.

1.- Greet students, and ask one or two how they are. (30 sec) 2.- Now guys I'm going to play two fragments of two different songs, I hope you listen to what is different between what they are wishing and hoping for. 10 seconds 3.- Play Lee Ann Womack's - I Hope You Dance (Official Music Video) s25 to s 37 of the video. focusing on hopes. 20 sec 4.- Now play Skee-Lo - I Wish (Official Video) 0.14 sec- to 0.20 sec of the video, focusing on wishes. 20 sec 5.- Show them slide one of the presentation and tell them that they are going to play the two videos again and then they'll be divided into groups, they will discuss what is the difference between the things he wishes, and the things she hopes for. 1 min OCFB: Ok so on the second video, what was he wishing about? (guide them towards impossible things) In the first video, what was she hoping for? was it an impossible or a desire for a possibility? 40 sec 6.- Tell me something (emphasise) "you wish would happen in the future". And something you wish happened in the present.

Exposure (6-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a transcript of the audios and questions

1.- provide in the general chat link to Google-form: https://forms.gle/zVfC7MjEqvhHePs96. 2.- Confirm everybody can see it. 30 sec 3.- Now show slides 3 to 7 and elicit answers to the questions: Is it happening? Is it now or in the future? Is it possible? 3-4 min 4.- Tell them that they individually have one minute to answer AND SUBMIT THE FORM. 1 min 5.- OCFB 2 min

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language, help them through deduction to identify meaning and form. Clarify the need for "were" in formal register of "I wish I were"

1.- Use slides 3 and 9 in the presentation to guide learners to focus on wish(as impossible) and hope(as likely) in the present and future. Point out the tenses that are used, do NOT give them the answers, elicit their answers 3 min

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

1.- copy in the general chat the link to the Google form:https://forms.gle/CpPdgkxeKW2GCui6A 2.- Confirm that everyone can see it. Explain each part of the form (2 minutes) 3.- Tell the learners that you are going to break them into groups and that as a group they must try to answer the form while thinking about why they are choosing those answers, when they are done, they must submit the form. 3 minutes 4.- OCFB while solving the form, 3 min. 5.- Now show SS slide 8, and tell them to listen to which words are stressed in the song (play second song s.27 to 30) ask them to write in the general chat the words they would stress. 6.- Now ask them to do the same for the other two sentences in the slide. What words do you think must be stressed in these two other sentences, please write them in the chat room. 1 min 7.- Show slide 9, and explain that only important meaning-carrying words are stressed.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

1.- Copy the link to Google form: https://forms.gle/BemRZgDBF3o9ehRG9 in the general Chat room. 2.- confirm that everyone can see it, then tell students that they have one minute to individually answer the questions. 2 min 3.- OCFB. 2 min 4.- Open the Zoom whiteboard and ask students to write an "I wish sentence" in past simple, continuous, with the modal and past simple." you now have one minute to write one wish that is not happening One wish that will not happen and one hope. 3 minutes. 5.- OCFB

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

1.- show slides 9 and 10, and tell learners they have 4 minutes to talk about 3 things that they wish were different in their lives. 3 things that they wish would be different in their lives. 3 things they hope for the future. 1 min 2.- confirm instructions and time. 3.- open Breakout rooms and monitor students. 4 min 4.- OCFB 3 min
