Description

In this lesson students learn about the present continuous tense through guided discovery based on a listening text about neighbors. The lesson starts with a discussion about neighbors doing different activities. This is followed by a listening text that describes the picture. Then there is some controlled practice and finally, free practice via a speaking activity.

Materials

Abc New English File Elementary - PPT

Main Aims

  • Students will have identified and practiced the key structure "present continuous" in the context of some neighbors doing noisy activities.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will have practiced listening for specific information in the context of neighbors doing different activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll start the session with two pictures about noisy neighbors and ask some questions: What can you see in the pictures? Are they living in the same place? Are people here happy or angry? Why? Do you have noisy neighbors? Are you a noisy neighbor?

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To present new words from the text in order to make it easier for them to understand.

I will present four words: violin, bark, argue and furniture. I will display a picture and ask them to guess the word, then show the word and drill pronunciation and stress pattern.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the the present continuous tense.

Students will look at a picture of 8 flats. People there are doing different activities. They will check these activities then match them with the sentences of exercise 2. After that I will hide the sentences and show the picture again, then play a listening track about these activities. I will pause after each activity and ask them to questions: What's happening? Where?

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the language through the next activity. I'll ask them questions to have them discover the rule. I will go through meaning, form and pronunciation of the examples. I will ask questions: Is the baby crying now? Yes. Is she playing the violin now? Yes. Are these things happening now? Do we use the present continuous to talk about things that are happening at the moment? Who is crying? The baby. What is the baby doing? He's crying What comes after he? 's Is it the short form of is? Yes. What is similar in crying, playing and having? They end in -ing. So we start with the subject then verb to be then verb + ing. I'll do the same for the other examples and dill pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will answer exercise a p. 111. The exercise has 3 pictures. They are asked to write a question and an answer about each picture. They will work individually first then check their answers in pairs. They will answer another exercise (If there is enough time) The exercise has eight sentences. Students are asked to put the verbs in brackets in the present continuous.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will listen to a track of sounds and write six sentences about them using the present continuous.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will work in pairs to describe to pictures and mention the eight differences. They will practice using the present continuous.
