Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of comparatives and superlatives in the context of low tech solutions and help them use those adjectives in daily life.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in the context of low tech solutions and daily life.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Use photos and subheadings to elicit from learners the topics on pg 56. Ask questions like "What are they doing?" reading, playing, going for a ride. "Where are they?" In the forest, in the street, at home, etc. Give them the form with the lead in for them to match subheadings to paragraphs as a Gist task. They read and check answers in OCFB.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Explain shortly and give examples of comparatives and superlatives. Ask students to read the paragraphs again and choose the comparatives and superlatives out of the multiple options in the form. This is used as the intensive task. Check this in OCF. Take up to 7-8 minutes.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Give the activity to cover MPF by answering the rules of comparatives and superlatives. Give them 2 or 3 minutes to answer by themselves and then check this in OCF. Give them the form with two simple questions to clarify the use of quantifiers. Give them 2 minutes and check this in OCF. To cover pronunciation and also as a Controlled Practice I will play my recorded audio to make them recognize the correct answers and write it in the last form. Check this in OCF. This can take up to 5 or 6 minutes.

Free Practice (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Make students practice what they have learned by choosing an invention from the last 100 years. Write 2 or 3 sentences to describe how this invention has changed our lives and talk with a partner about that. If we have more than 3 students, I'll make some breakout rooms so they can play that game once or twice with different partners. Give feedback.
