Description

In, this lesson, students practice reading for gist and reading for specific information to answer some questions. I'll start with a lead-in (exercise 2a), then they will practice reading for gist (skimming) to answer exercise 2b, then they will practice reading for specific details (scanning) to answer exercise 2e. After that they will have a speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll show a picture of some women going out for evening and as them a question: What can you see in this picture? - Some women having dinner. Where do you think are they? - At a restaurant. Do women in your country? -Yes Where do they go? - To the club/ restaurant/ coffee/ shopping....

Pre-teach vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To get the students familiar with the cities of the first task.

I'll display some pictures to get the students know the cities in the text before they read for gist. These cities are Rio De Janeiro, Beijing and Mosco. I'll start with a picture of the city and ask a question: Can you guess the city? -Yes/ No Here is a clue: I'll show a picture related to the country. - They will figure out the city. I'll draw attention to the Russian weather and clothes and the Chinese people.

Pre-Reading/Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I'll give the instructions first then show them the slide. Now you have a task: There are three women journalists from different countries went out for evening and wrote a report for the magazine. You are asked to look at the pictures and read the two reports quickly for 3 minutes then guess where Sabina and Sharon live. ICQs How many cities do we have? 3 How many reports do we have? 2 Are you going to read every word? No Are you going to guess the city? Yes How much time do you have? 3 minutes After reading, we discuss the answers together.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Students here will have a different task. They will read the text again for more specific information. They are asked to read the reports again and complete the chart with yes or no. They will work individually and have thirty seconds to look at the questions first. I'll model the first one. -Now, alone read the reports again to complete the chart with yes or no. You have 6 minutes. ICQs. Are you going to read the reports again? Yes Are you going to write anything? No Are you going to mark yes or no? Yes How many minutes do you have? 6 minutes Are you going to work in groups ? No. Alone After finishing they work in pairs to check their answers then come to share them in the main room.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will read the reports again to match the questions with the women's answers. (Reading for detail) They will work individually first then in pairs to check their answers. -Now alone, read the reports again and match the questions to the women's answers. You only have 5 minutes. I'll give them 30 seconds to look at the questions first and model the first one. ICQs Are you going to work in groups? No, alone. Are you going to match the questions to the answers? Yes. How many minutes? 5 After finishing: Now work in pairs to check your answers . You have two minutes.

Post-Reading/Listening (7-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will practice speaking for fluency. They will talk about their last evening outing with their friends. They work in pairs for 5 minutes then come for feedback.
