Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a role play in the context of resolving conflict

Procedure

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Great the SS. Show them the photo of a married couple who are upset. Tell them that Tina is upset with Nour because he forgot her birthday. Ask: What do you think Nour is saying? What is Tina saying? Give them 1 minute to think in pairs. Listen to them and give feedback on content.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Tell SS that they are going to read a short text quickly to answer that question: What was the narrator's unexpected role? Show SS the QR code for the reading text. Give them 3 minutes. Elicit the answer: an actor Ask SS to highlight all the past modals in the text, like the given example. They can work in pairs. Show them the highlighted parts. Discuss the meanings with them.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Let SS write the 'form' of the past modals. Read the different usages from the book.

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

For clarification, SS will answer exercise A in the book as a Kahoot. It acts as CCQs for the whole lesson. As plan B, let them work in pairs first, then check with other pairs. Give them 4 minutes. Have open-class feedback and clarify any confusing ideas.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

SS work in groups of 3. They check whether the sentences in Ex B are correct or not. If not, they need to correct them. Give them 6 minutes. SS check with other groups before showing them the answers on the board.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

SS role play the situation in Ex C in pairs. Both students have to play both roles. Each role takes around 2 minutes. Give them 4 minutes to prepare, before starting the role play. Monitor discreetly and take notes for feedback. Write correct and wrong sentences on the board. Ask SS to decide which sentences are correct and which are wrong. They need to correct the wrong ones.
