Modals of obligation - must, have to- should
Intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students are introduced to modals of obligation – must, have to, and should – through guided discovery based on a reading text about becoming a millionaire. The lesson starts with a warmer to remind SS about the text they read in the previous lesson and about what it takes to become a millionaire. This is followed by a handout in which SS answer questions that will help them to discover the meaning, function and form of the target language. Next SS complete controlled and freer exercises that introduce new vocabulary, some of which will be pre-taught and another series that SS need to discuss in pair work.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of modals of obligation in the context of jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy in the use of new vocabulary and use of modals have to, must, and should in speaking practice in the context of jobs

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Greet SS and talk about the previous lesson. Mention how I imagined becoming a millionaire and what I would do. Ask them what they would do if they were millionaires. Then ask what they remember from the text they read and if it is easy or difficult to become a millionaire. Elicit answers. Ask questions like: “How do people become a millionaire? What do they do to achieve this.?” etc.

Guided Discovery (10-12 minutes) • to enable SS to discover the meaning, function and form of modals of obligation

Tell SS they’ll receive a HO with sentences from the text “Have you got what it takes.” Add they will need to come up with the meaning and use of the grammar point of this lesson. Tell SS they will work individually for 5 minutes. Ask ICQs. After SS are clear about the task, give the HO1 to SS. Monitor closely and guide SS when necessary. When the time is up, re-groups weaker SS with stronger SS as possible. Tell them they will work in pairs and check their answers for 2 minutes. Monitor closely, assisting when needed. After WC FB, give the AK and allow time for SS to check their answers.
