To provide Ss the opportunity to practice writing in English by writing a short story/fairy tale.
Subsidiary Aims

To enable Ss to practice reading for gist and detail.
Procedure (39-47 minutes)
T briefly explains fairy tales and provides examples. Ss share any fairy tales or other stories that they enjoyed in childhood.
Ss gist read 'The Lion and the Mouse' individually. (3 min) T elicits meaning of story structure lexis from Ss. (2 min) Ss identify key components of 'The Lion and the Mouse' Ex: setting, conflicts (2 min) Ss reread the story for detail to answer the following questions: (8 min) What age group is this story written for? What lesson does the story teach? What tenses are used? Ss go into BORs to answer the questions with a partner. Ss answer the questions as a class. (2 min)
T goes over guidelines for Ss to write their own stories. (1 min) ICQs: Where does it say how many words are needed? (the checklist) How many words does your story need? (at least fifty) Ss write their stories individually. (7 min) Pairs of Ss are made to review each others stories, using the checklist as an assessment tool. Ss then discuss the following questions regarding their stories: (6 min) - What is the story about? - Does the story complete the checklist? - What does the story do well? - How can the story be improved? Ss share their answers with the class. (3 min)
T reviews any words or phrasing used by Ss that can be improved. Two sentences, one correct and one incorrect, are placed next to one another for Ss to discern which is incorrect and why. (5 min)
