Description

In this lesson, students learn about unusual days out, and the new vocabulary related to the topic, through guided discovery based on reading a text about the world's weirdest museums. The lesson starts with an interesting lead-in that is presented by a pair work activity through a collaborative crosswords game of the new vocabulary introduced in the lesson. This is followed by PTV stage, then comes the exposure and clarification stages. Finally, we have controlled practice through pair work and answering the questions, and freer practice through group work to speak about free days out in the town or city the students are.

Main Aims

  • At the end of the lesson, the students will be able to provide a good practice of different lexical sets mentioned in the text such as; bizarre, sculptures, miniature, peckish..... etc

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a good practice and speaking freely with fluency.
  • To provide a clarification of the different functions of lexical sets of the target language concepts

Procedure

Lead-in activity (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students and also to activate the students' knowledge or experience with the topic and introduce the topic of the lesson.

The lead-in activity will be presented by the teacher by practising a collaborative crosswords game of the new lexical sets or vocabulary introduced into the lesson, and this is through pair work.

PTV (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and introduce some important vocabulary to activate the students' schemata.

To present some pre-teaching vocabulary that are related to the lesson of unusual days out.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

To read the text quickly for prediction of some details and ask the students some CCQs to make sure of their understanding.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language concepts

The teacher begins to clarify the concepts of the target language that are previously highlighted in the text, and uses MPF or MFP to give more clarification of the meanings, form and pronunciation of the target language and make the students elicit them by themselves.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Through multiple choice activity or handout, the teacher uses controlled practice to concept check and to investigate the students' learning process.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language concepts and lexical sets mentioned in the text.

It is a free practice introduced by the teacher via a final group work speaking activity. The teacher let the students speak freely with their classmates after dividing them into groups and leave much space for them to contact and communicate expressing their plans and arrangements for free days out in the town or city they are living in.

Feed back (3-5 minutes) • To achieve the students' accuracy and fluency.

Finally, the teacher gives his feedback to achieve his students' fluency by correcting the mistakes he observed during the freer practice.
