Future time
Beginner (CLB 2) level

Description

In this lesson, students will plan a vacation using future time language. They will first read an example provided by the teacher and then be given guidelines along with a template. Students will practise "be going to" and "will" in their writing and presentations.

Materials

Abc Present Progressive to Express Future Time

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of future time using present progressive and "be going to" in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification of "will" versus "be going to"

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

How was your morning? What did you eat for breakfast? (past tense) What are you doing after class? What are your plans for the weekend? (future tense--listen for "be going to" or "will" or any present progressive phrases and take note for later)

Exposure (10-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Show p. 319 (pdf text); use whiteboard to write over top of verbs from "leave" to "come" and have Ss practise present progressive. Discuss how to finish predicate with chosen verbs (ie. "stay" implies a location; "spend" can be applied towards money, time, etc.); practise together with exercise 8.

Highlighting (5-6 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Re-write some of the sentences from exercise 8 and ask how to use "will" to express these same sentences in future time (ie. My mother and I will leave for our trip at 10 tomorrow, etc.). Take turns practising.

Clarification (10-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Show slides starting at 10-6: "They will arrive at 10 tomorrow." Go through each slide, step by step with student prompting. Stop slides after the questions section of 10-7.

Controlled Practice (Afterwards is break at 2pm) (10-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Show Ss my "Planning a Future Vacation" worksheet and go over instructions; Ask questions myself to Ss to have them answer what my plan is. Have Ss practise asking me questions about my trip.

Semi-Controlled Practice - After break, at 2:15pm (10-15 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Have Ss visit the websites to pick places to stay, eat, and things to do on their future vacation plans; T's role is to check in with Ss and ask a few guided questions to maintain focus and help Ss complete their charts.

Free Practice (15-30 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss will complete their charts and when finished will present to the class. Students should ask Ss questions about their plans; T can do some guidance here, but largely taking notes on grammar as Ss use the language. Remaining minutes in class will be devoted to T sharing these notes and Ss doing error corrections.
