Description

This lesson includes teaching grammar and give the ss the chance to practice it both through controlled and freer exercises using the text-based approach.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Defining relative clauses in the context of technological items and going on holiday.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about Technological items in the context of using technology.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, the ss are going to have a discussing question using the first slide for 3 minutes expressing their opinions whether they are technology-lovers or haters in addition to giving one reason.

Reading Task (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

In this step, the ss are asked to match some words related to the topic of technology with their definitions which include 'relative clauses' to be exposed and clarified in the following stage. (HOs; task 1)

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to expose and elicit the TL.

The aim of this stage is just to expose the TL and give the ss the chance to guess what the grammar topic might be about by underlining the relative clauses within the definitions given in the previous task. (HO; task 2)

Language clarification (10-15 minutes) • To provide a further clarification of the TL.

For this, ex1 in page 82, SB will be used to drag the ss' attention to the core of the grammar. I'm going to teach the meaning and usage of relative pronouns targeted in the lesson and then ask them to give me examples applied on the statements provided before moving on to ex 2 &3.

Controlled practice. (8-8 minutes) • To allow the Ss automise the form of the TL presented to them.

This stage will determine whether the ss completely grasp the meanings and usages of the Defining Relative Clauses well or they still have problems using them to join statements. They are going to work on pairs in BRs and have two sentences to join under each picture. Then, they would come back for the FB and presenting their answers. (HO; task3)

Freer practice. (6-8 minutes) • To give the SS the flexibility using the TL with their own knowledge.

The ss are going to be divided into BRs in small groups showing each other a photo or a place they have been to before trying to talk about this stuff in the FB.
