In this lesson, students will learn about collocations and phases in the context of fixing things

Materials

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of of fixing things

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show students G-Jamboard's first slide with the question "Problems with technology?" elicit students' ideas by asking them to think about the last time they had technology problems and what problems they think they can have with it. Move to the next slide and ask students to discuss what they think happened in each picture. If more than four students attend the class, share the G-Jamboard link with students and use breakout rooms for them to discuss in pairs.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students will look at the dialog and answer the following questions: Who are the speakers? Where are they? What problem do they have? Was there a solution to the problem? Discuss the answers in an open class

Highlighting (7-8 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

As an intensive reading activity, the students receive the link for the G-Jamboard where they will be asked to move the stickers in the order they happened in the conversation. Model the activity to keep the pace of the lesson. Check the answers in OCFB

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

M: For meaning, the students will match the pictures to the phases in the G-Jamboard. If the size of the class allows it, have them do it in pairs Form: In the same G-Jamboard ask students to match the collocation/phases in the right order. Model the activity with the example. Controlled Practice (4-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Share the G-Form link with the students. Ask questions to check they understood the task. The students will fill the forms with questions and submit their answers for review in open class feedback. Free Practice (8-9 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students will look at the board where the three questions will be projected. Students will be asked to discuss the questions with a partner. If the session has more than 2 students, Use breakout rooms to allow more time for conversation. In that case, change partners every 3 minutes. Lastly ask a few opinions in OCFB. If the session has only one student, continue the conversation with follow-up questions or ask about a different problem with technology that they might have.
