Procedure (37-45 minutes)
1. I will show the Ss the following quotes about first impressions and ask them which one they agree with and say briefly why. a. "Two things remain irretrievable: time and a first impression." ~ Cynthia Ozick b. "I don't know if you've ever noticed this, but first impressions are often entirely wrong.“ ~ Daniel Handler
1. I will ask the Ss to read the text "Trust your instincts" individually and highlight the following information in the text. (Ex 5a.) I will give them 3 minutes to read and highlight. a) The summary of the book. b) A negative example of first impressions. c) A positive example of first impressions. 2. Once they finished, I will show the Ss the information highlighted in the text and I will ask them if they have doubts about it. 3. I will ask the Ss to work in pairs via BORs to classify the words that are in bold in the text into four categories: verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and nouns. I will set 3 minutes in the BORs and I will be monitoring the activity and taking notes for the OCFB. 4. I will share the answer key on the screen and I will ask four doubts. I will conduct the OCFB.
MEANING I will show the SS three sentences with words from the text and I will elicit the meaning of each word. a) About 70% of the oxygen ORIGINATES from the ocean. CCQ 1: Which other words could replace ORIGINATES in this sentence? CCQ 2: Which is the opposite word to ORIGINATE? b) The CONCLUSIONS of the book were disappointing CCQ 1: Which other words could replace CONCLUSIONS in this sentence? CCQ 2: What is the opposite of the conclusion? c) The Eiffel Tower in Paris is a recognizable landmark. CCQ 1: Which other words could replace recognizable in this sentence? CCQ 2: Which word is the opposite of recognizable? FORM I will ask the Ss the function of the word in each context and I will elicit the other forms of each word family highlighting and emphasizing the suffixes each time. I will ask the Ss to identify which ones are equal. I will write the words in an example phrase. PRONUNCIATION I will model the words. I will ask Ss to identify the stress and links on all the phrases. I will ask Ss to drill.
1. I will ask Ss to look at the first sentence from the activity that I will share on the screen. Then, I will ask them to complete the sentences with the correct form of the words from the article. I will ask them if they have questions about the instructions. 2. I will ask the Ss to complete the activity individually. I will give 3 to 4 minutes to my Ss. 3. I will give them 3 minutes to check the answers in pairs via BORs. I will be monitoring the activity. 4. I will show the answer key on the screen and I will ask for doubts. I will conduct the OCFB.
1. I will tell the Ss that if they want to give a good impression, in any situation, they should avoid touching their faces. Then, I will ask Ss to read think about the two following questions and tell me if the have doubts. Then, I will ask them to discuss in pairs for 5 minutes in the BORs. I will be monitoring the discussion. a) What is your advice for someone who wants to give a good first impression in a job interview? b) How can the advice change if the interview is face-to-face or online? 2. I will conduct the OCFB.
