Pre-Intermediate level
Description
Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide students with an opportunity to practice listening for gist and detail in the context of people speaking about their interests as it pertains to possible jobs or careers.
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide students with an opportunity to practice speaking about their own interests.
-
To review the following words: ambition, continent, improve, independent and interest.
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
The students will discuss in groups (or pairs if we have fewer students) what they are interested in when looking for a job. I will provide them with a couple of examples beforehand so they can start to get in the mindset of the topic.
Students will complete a match activity to review vocabulary that will be in the listening.
The students will hear an audio recording with the purpose of understanding the general idea. After listening they will go back to their groups (or pairs) and they will discuss who of the people in the audio had similar interests to theirs.
Students will listen a second time to the audio file and take note of the recorded people's interests so they can complete the blank boxes in the interest box activity. They will once again partner up to check if they have the same answers. Afterward we'll discuss together the interests they heard.
Finally, the students will have an opportunity to use the vocabulary as we discuss some suggestions of possible jobs, or careers, that the people in the recording might be interested in based on what they shared.
