Description

An introduction to the use of the storytelling technique for teaching young learners

Materials

Abc Interactive slides

Main Aims

  • to let students experiment with a storytelling lesson for young learners to extract the basic principles involved in the technique

Subsidiary Aims

  • to provide practice and diagnostic opportunities of some aditional aspects needed to teach young learners (span of attention, pace, prop creation, etc)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show some pictures and let Ss guess the topic of the lesson Activate schema by asking what comes to mind when discussing Storytelling and young learners

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

The teacher tells a story used to introduce the sound of the letter S. The Students analyze the model in terms of aims, length, aids, etc.

Task (8-10 minutes) • Workshop to provide the teachers opportunity to solve a task

Student Teachers work in groups to create a story and a hand movement following the model as an example. They are provided with a song as a starting point. The teacher monitors and prompts when needed, but it should be as free as possible Then, the groups present it in OC

Feedback (6-8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to reflect on the task and its achievements

Peer feedback guided by questions Teacher corrects or praises

Analysis (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the input and let students recognize the key principles applied

In pairs students solve a multiple choice quiz with the key principles according to Harmer, using their task and feedback to choose the proper answer

Reflection and theory (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with a theoretical framework and a reflection on the class

As a follow-up, students need to reflect on the new knowledge acquired by practice They also need to read some theory about the topic (it is important that theory is provided after the practice, so a deeper reflection can be obtained) Discussion at the beginning of the following class
