Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a formal letter to a language school

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-T starts sharing her screen - T asks Ss If they have ever written a letter. - Ss answer. if the answer is yes T asks them if it was a formal or informal letter and who it was addressed to.

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

- T shows Ss a letter model. - Ss get 1 min to read the letter. - T asks Ss what the letter is about. - Ss answer. - T asks Ss if the letter is formal or informal. - Ss answer (formal). - T asks Ss to identify the structure/elements of the letter. - Ss get 1 min to think and answer. - T shows answers.

Useful Language (4-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

- T shows the same letter and a list of informal phrases. - T asks Ss to find those phrases in their formal form in the text. - Ss get 2 min to look for them and answer. - T shows answers. - T asks Ss if they have any questions about the meaning of the phrases. - If yes, T goes over the meaning. if not, T continues to the next stage.

Productive Task(s) (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

- T gives Ss 20 min to write their own letter using the structure and useful language seen in previous stages. - T shares the google docs link.

Feedback and Error Correction (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

- Once time's over T sends Ss in groups to breakout rooms for 5 min to share their writing. - Ss read and comment on each other's writing (content and language). - T monitors and takes notes. - Once time is over everyone comes back to the main room. - T shares her screen. - T goes over delayed error correction using the notes she took during the previous stage.
