Description

In this lesson students learn about the difference between Present Simple and Present Continuous using listening as a basis for grammar in context.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of Present Simple VS Present Continuous in the context of Describing people's lives

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a Conversation in the context of Talking about people important to you

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T displays a picture and asks about a possible relationship between the women in the picture (Karina and her collegue), and what they could be doing at the moment. T displays 3 more pictures and elicits some ideas about their relationship to Karina.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

SS listen to the track about Karina and note the relationship of each person to Karina. SS listen to the track again and complete the gaps with TL.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T displays P.S. and P.C. sentences from the track and asks which is which.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

SS in pairs match P.S. and P.C. sentences with explanations for their usage. T checks the answers. T elicits and contrasts P.S. and P.C. forms. T drills P.S. and P.C. pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

If time: HO 2 ex. 1 - SS complete individually, then Group check. HO 2 ex. 2 - SS complete individually, then pair check.

Semi-Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

HO 2 ex. 2 - discuss the questions in pairs.

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

HO 3 - SS make sentences about people important to them and what they do/are doing now.
