Description

In this lesson , my students will learn about lifestyle of people how to keep healthy. Firstly , Ss. look at some photos and say why they think those elderly people are healthy. Secondly, they read for gist to find out What’s unusual about Okinawan people? then assign them to read again fill in with the suitable headings. After that , Ss. will interview a partner with a questionnaire about if they live the Okinawan way .

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about Okinawan people in the context of staying healthy

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a questionnaire in the context of Okinawans' lifestyle.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will ask my ss to look at the pictures of elderly people and guess how old are they, what are they doing and if it's usual to do these kind of activities at this age. I will assign then to talk in pairs about how to keep healthy then Provide an open pairs feedback.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will set the context of the Reading by introducing a photo of Tashakani, a Japanese elderly man, ask ss to guess " how old is he , where does he come from ,and what is the secret of the island he lives on . " to generate their interest and activate their schemata. Next, I will assign them to match the word to meanings individually then check in pairs and finally with a key answer on the board.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

( Reading for gist) I will assign ss to read the second paragraph( individually) and say what's unusual about people of Okinawa? What is the secret of their island. I will ask them to check in pairs then answer key on the board . (Reading for scanning) I will assign ss to read the rest of the text then match the headings to the paragraphs individually then I will ask them to check in pairs then answer key on the board .

While-Reading/Listening #2 (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

(Reading for details ) What do Okinawas usually eat? Give some examples of physical activities that Okinawa people do. What do people do to relax? to what age the Okinawas keep working ? What answer The Okinawan say when asked what is the secret of your long life?

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will assign ss to do a questionnaire about their lifestyle in pairs then change the group so that everyone can participate finally the one who has the most points is the healthiest. I will monitor then gi ve them feedback on content and language.
