Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of intelligent machines that are useful to make life easier

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher greets the students and checks the seating arrangement to make sure each table has three members minimum. T displays Slide 2 and elicits the topic from students. CCQs: -What are they? (Machines) -Are they new or old machines? (New) -Do they work well? (Yes) -Are they intelligent [smart] machines? (Yes) Teacher divides the classroom into three groups as A, B and C and tells them to come together with their groups. T moves on with Slide 3 and tells students to discuss the questions on the slide. After eliciting answers, T takes notes of them on the board so that the students could check if they are correct or not.

Pre-Reading (10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Before they start reading, teacher tells student that they will perform a matching activity. T shows Slide 4 and hands out the vocabulary sheet. Students match the pictures with words in the box individually first and then check in groups. T get the answers from the students and reveal them on the same slide. T shows sentences on Slide 5 and drills the pronunciation in sentences.

While-Reading #1 (10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

Teacher gives students HO1 and tells them to read the text quickly and check if their guesses were correct or not (showing their answers on the board). Teacher tells them to unfold the paper and look at the questions first. T instructs them to read the paragraph carefully and answer the questions below. Students check their answers in groups and go back to their previous seats.

While-Reading #2 (15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks through retelling what they read

Teacher gives students HO2 in folded form and tell them not to look at the text. T explains them that they need to tell their groups about their machines. They try to answer the questions in groups. Teacher monitors them and elicits answers from students. Next, T tells them to unfold their papers and read & listen the whole text again to check their answers. Teachers goes on with the next slide to show the answers. Audio link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YwgZHMtqc5U&t=5119s
