Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about First meetings in the context of Memories

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a Discussion in the context of First impressions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T asks SS to discuss some questions: Have you ever met a famous person? If not, who would you like to meet most and why?

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

SS listen to the track all together. SS individually match the speakers with the people they met. Then SS check the answers in pairs, then deliver answers to T.

Pre-Reading/Listening (2-3 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

T asks SS about the meaning of the following words: - gorgeous; - bump into; - drop. T explains if SS don't know the words.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

SS listen to the track again and make notes. After that they have to answer: - when and where people in the track met; - what they said to each other. SS check answers in pairs. SS come back to the teacher to answer the questions.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

SS discuss the questions in pairs: 1. What do you notice about people when you first meet: their voice, their face and hair, their clothes or something else? 2. How accurate are your first impressions of people? Have you ever been completely wrong about someone? 3. Have you ever met anyone famous? Where were you? What do you remember about him/her?
