Main Aims

  • To introduce and practice functional language for agreeing, disagreeing and asking for opinions

Subsidiary Aims

  • Phonology: To provide accuracy of intnation of the words, sentence stress and clarify pronunciation.
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a agreeing, disagreeing & asking for opinions

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T introduces the topic through questions on jamboard Instructions: look at the question on the screen, read them and give a short opinion about it. -Did you have to pay for education? -do you think people have to pay for education? why? why not? *After a student shares, T nominates other Ss to comment on the opinion shared by their classmate.

Exposure (8 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

students work on differentiating words for agreeing, disagreeing and asking for opinions. Instructions: -First Ss take a look at the table and they need to see the main focus of the conversation (agreeing, disagreeing and asking for opinion). -Second students need to fill the table with the words. -Third, Ss will watch a video and identify the phrases from the tables and see the use of them. after finishing OCFB to correct.

Useful Language (14 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

clarifying meaning, use and variations of meaning. Instructions: Meaning Learners will observe the phrases and teacher will instruct them through how these can be use for different (or similar) purposes. main sentences: -Not in my books. -No, definitely no. -Yes/No, i don´t think so. CCQ’s to narrow meaning: *Is it formal to use this expression? (no) *is the word definitely adding extra strength to the sentence? *If I tell you Yes, i think so. Am I a 100% percent sure? (No) Form: Students will organise the phrases from the previous task. Attend PP&S to clarify form: *T clarifies it is a fixed sentence and it cannot change. *T provides different adverbs that can be used for the expression. i.e Absolutely, strongly. *clarify the expression can use synonyms of the verb thnik for not affecting the meaning. I.e. “believe”. Pronunciation Learners will drill on sentences to see the correct intonation and stress of the words Attend PP&S to clarify meaning: *T clarifies pronunciation by showing the IPA format to the students and also have the class to make drills.

Productive Task(s) (8 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Students' controlled practice task Instructions: share the GGFs and have Ss to go through the sentences while showing the options on shared screen on jamboard. model an example and then have students to finish individually. -After everyone finishes T shares the answers and OCFB

Feedback and Error Correction (10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Students speak and do role play task. Instructions: Discuss the following questions with a partner, one is in favour and one is against. After finishing students switch their roles. - After activity T Conducts feedback on the task. -DEC
