Description

In this lesson, students will learn about "there is" and "there are" through being exposed to various examples of them in the context of houses and furniture in order to develop their written and spoken language skills.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice of "there is" and "there are" in the context of house and decoration.
  • To provide clarification of the different forms of "there is" and "there are" in the context of houses and decoration

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about room sets in the context of houses and decoration

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ss will be shown a picture of a messy room and then be asked what they can see in the room. Then they will do exercise 1.a and b

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through listening to a text

Ss will listen to a conversation between a real estate agent and some clients to familiarize them more with the target language..

guided discovery (10-15 minutes) • To help ss identify the form and meaning.

Through Ex 3, students complete a table which includes affirmative, negative and interrogative examples of "there" is and "there are" from the dialogue. Then, they are asked to complete another table containing only the structure. Finally, they perform some drills with the teacher to practice the pronunciation.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do simple gap-filler questions in exercise 6a P.133 to check their understanding of the form. Then they do a more complicated one in b through providing affirmative, negative and interrogative forms.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ss complete some questions using there is and there are then they ask their peers in a conversation
