Description

By the end of the lesson, students will have gone through a reading text in the context of carnivals, first by having a gist reading activity and then a detailed reading activity on the same text. After they will have finished reading, they will have written about their experience in carnivals or festivals. In the end, they will be given detailed content and language feedback.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about carnivals.

Subsidiary Aims

  • Students will practice writing about carnivals.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- I will start the session by asking them about how they spent their Eid. - I will keep eliciting answers from them until I get close to the target word, which is "carnival". - If they didn't get close to it, I will use this as an introduction to the 1-minute lead-in video, which shows the idea of a carnival in an entertaining way. - After they watch the video, I will send them in pairs/groups to discuss some questions about carnivals. - When they are done, I will make sure they shared the answers together.

Pre-Teaching Vocabulary (2-5 minutes) • To prepare the students for the text by teaching them the blocking words.

- I will show them the pictures first and I'll elicit the meaning of the picture from them. - When they get the meaning, I will introduce the word to them and ask them to pronounce it without reading it first. - I will then show them the word in addition to an example.

Reading for gist (8-10 minutes) • To generate general information about the text of the lesson.

- I will ask them to read the text silently in 5 minutes and try to the understand what is happening in brief. - When they finish reading, I will send them in pairs/groups to discuss what they understood for 2 minutes. - I will use ICQs to make sure they got the instructions clearly.

Reading for specific information (8-12 minutes) • To generate specific information about the text of the lesson.

- I will show them some questions before they read. - I will ask them to read the text silently and answer the detailed questions while reading. - I will use ICQs to make sure they got the instructions clearly. - When they finish reading, I will send them in pairs/groups for 2 minutes to discuss the answers together.

Text Analysis (8-10 minutes) • To give the students a chance to analyze the useful language in the text.

- I will show them a picture of missing words. - I will ask them to find the missing words in the text. - I will give them a hint that those words are underlined. - I will use ICQs to make sure they got the instructions clearly. - When they finish, I will send them in pairs/groups for 2 minutes to check their answers.

Writing (10-15 minutes) • To give the students a chance to reflect on the text by writing.

- I will ask them to write a paragraph about a carnival they have attended before. - If they haven't attended one, I will ask them to imagine one and write about it. - I will make sure they use the useful language (text analysis) in their writing. - I will use ICQs to make sure they got the instructions clearly. - When they finish, I will ask everyone to share their paragraphs with me.

Feedback (5-10 minutes) • To give the students content and language feedback on their paragraphs.

- I will praise them on using the content and useful language of the text. - If they haven't used it correctly, I will correct their mistakes.
