Description

In this lesson, students will develop their reading comprehension skills (skimming, scanning, and inference) and learn some new vocabulary through some guided discovery based on a reading text about "The Great International Night out". The lesson starts with a discussion with the students about the different activities they can do to spend a good night out. This is followed by a matching question and then a sentence completion exercise. Finally, there is a freer practice for the students to think and discuss how popular these activities are in their countries.

Main Aims

  • In this lesson, students will learn to develop their reading skills, including scanning to locate specific information and skimming to get the gist using a text about" The Great International Night out". They will also be introduced to new vocabulary and learn to infer the meanings of those words within the context.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To practice speaking through using some useful phrases to discuss with their partners the activities they do in their countries to spend a night out.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will showing the students different pictures of people' night out, then elicit: "Where are they? "What are they doing?", after that showing them some activities to choose the ones they do when they go out with friends and the ones they never do, providing a reason.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

presenting the pre-teach-vocabulary (banned-ingredients-applauded-unwind-tone deaf-a craze) which the students need to learn before they read the text by eliciting their meanings through asking some CCQs and drilling.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging specific information and inferences reading tasks

Asking Ss to read the first paragraph of the article and decide which three activities are mentioned in it and which countries they associate with these things. After that, Ss compare their answers to their pairs' then check the answer key.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed,reading tasks

Asking Ss to read the rest of the article and complete the sentences after showing them the key words that help them find the answers whether they are dates or places quicky. After that Ss will work in pairs and compare their answer. Then finally we check their answers together referring to the answer key.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ss will answer the questions in Ex.3, showing how popular the activities in their countries are and if people around the world would enjoy food, music, etc. from their country. Also, if the American influence increase where the students live or not.

Follow up (2-3 minutes) • To give Ls the chance to respond to the text To balance productive and receptive skills

Asking Ss to check the sentences, concerning language and content, which were written on the board while they Ss were discussing with their pairs.
