Description

In this lesson, the students will practice their listening skills for gist and detail in an job related environment

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about dissapointing job in the context of dream jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of used to in the context of a dream job gone wrong

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show a slide with three pictures of three different jobs. Ask What are these jobs? Would you like to them? Why? What is your dream job? Elicit lifeguard, ice cream tester, and personal shopper.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Ask concept questions: 1 to clarify the meaning of used to/ professional shopper/ curry and lime (I had a dream job.I used to be a florist, do you think I still am? no, I'm not/ what does a professional shopper do?/What is the craziest flavour of ice cream you can think of? What about curry and lime? Do you know what curry and lime is?) 2 Form (subject+used to+ infinitive) How can we form a used-to sentence, listen "I used to be a florist" What is the first word? ( the subject) then ( used to) and after that (verb) can you think of one? elicit one or two sentences For pronunciation: drill the sentences created

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Show G- jam board for students to match the audio to the corresponding picture

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Show students the g-form and ask them to listen again and answer the questions according to the recording.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Provide a G-jamboard to students. Ask students to match true or false statements. Encourage students to answer from what they remember. Provide the text script to help them check their answers. Ask if the people in the recording were happy in their jobs. What do they think about their situation? Elicit opinions Provide a slide on G-jamboard for the Ss to work in pairs and think about a different disappointing dream job and to provide three reasons why it would not be a good job. Check for mistakes
