Description

In this lesson students will learn about the capital city of Thailand, which is Bangkok. In the beginning before being introduced to the reading text they will be introduced to some Pre-Text Vocabulary through carrying out a matching exercise of each word with its meaning. They will start doing it individually after that they will check it in pairs before going through over this together. Afterwards they will be introduced to the text to read it individually first, then start carrying the following exercise that works on the skimming reading skills and then another exercise that enhances their scanning reading skills. In the end they will have a follow-up task that enhances their speaking and writing skills of having a discussion about their opinion of whether they want to visit Bangkok or not and why, after each one writing down their own opinions individually.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide students with new vocabulary about travelling. To enhance the skimming reading skill. To enhance their scanning approach while reading. To be able to write down their opinions about a travelling destination and discuss it in groups to enhance their speaking skill.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide some discussions to enhance their speaking. To enhance their writing skill through writing their opinions. To learn new vocabulary words.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Start with a personalized story and then start asking questions about different destinations to lead them in to the context

Pre-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Introduce them to new Pre-Text Vocabulary through a matching exercise to be carroied out individually first then check it in pairs

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading task

Ask them to solve the first task to enhance their skimming approach while reading and then check their answers in pairs.

While-Reading (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading task

Ask them to solve the second task that enhances their scanning approach while reading and enhances their vocabulary level as well. They will check it in pairs after completing it individually

Post-Reading/ Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Ask them to write their opinions about whether they want to visit Bangkok city in the future or not and why, then discuss their opinions together in groups of three students in each group
