Procedure (34-46 minutes)
- T displays a slide with two pictures and elicits from ss What do you think is happening here? *They are complaining about the noise in the next room Where are they?* - When we complain about something in, let's say a restaurant or a hotel, how do you try to do it? Do you get angry and talk rude? Or do you try to be polite?
- T displays a slide with 2 questions: -What was the conversation about? - What was the problem? - Ss listen to an audio to answer these two questions. - Ss share their answers with the class.
- T plays the audio again for ss to identify phrases where the guest is complaining and requesting something. - If ss are not able to do so, T displays the transcript of the audio. - T writes ss answers on the slide.
- T briefly elicits from learners what is complaining/requesting. - T shares a Google form where ss have to read some sentences and determine whether they are complaints or requests. - After they finish, T displays a slide with the sentences classified (answer key to the Google form) - T then reads aloud the samples and elicits from ss how's the intonation of the questions and points out the pronunciation of would and could. - T drills pronunciation as whole class then nominates 2-3 ss.
- T shares a link of Google forms where learners have to complete some sentences with the presented phrases. - When finished, T displays a slide with the answers.
Now, imagine you are on vacations, and your'e staying at a nice hotel, but then you find something is wrong in your room ... - Ss must role play in pairs a conversation between a receptionist and a guest, where the guest complains about something and makes requests. - T provides a list of ideas that learners could complain about. - T shares a screenshoot of an example that learners can use as reference. - Ss work in breakout rooms while T monitors and takes notes of mistakes and good language examples for DEC. - When they finished, T changes pairs so ss have a chance to work with other peers.
