Procedure (37-47 minutes)
- T starts sharing her screen - T asks Ss if they have ever participated in or seen a debate. - T asks Ss what they are supposed to do in a debate. - Ss share their opinions.
- T plays an audio of people discussing whether university should be free or not. - T asks Ss how many people agree that university should be free.
- T shows Ss a transcript of the conversation in the audio and asks Ss to find phrases that ask for a person's opinion or show agreement/disagreement. - Ss have 2 minutes to read and find these phrases. - Ss say which phrases they found. - T shows Ss the same transcript with all phrases highlighted.
- T asks Ss to label these phases as questions, agreements, or disagreements. - T shares the google docs link. - Ss have 2 minutes to answer. - T shows the answer key.
- T asks Ss to use the phrases to complete a fill-in-the-gaps exercise. - T shares the google docs link. - Ss have 3 minutes to answer. - T shares the answer key.
- T shows Ss a list of sentences. - T asks Ss to choose 2 sentences. - T forms groups of 4 in breakout rooms. - T asks Ss to use the phrases to discuss with their group if they agree or disagree with the sentence they chose and why. - Ss have 20 minutes to discuss with their group. Ss should spend at least 2 minutes discussing each sentence in the group.
