Main Aims

  • Students will be able to understand and practice the present perfect continuous (for and since) in the context of work

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about work

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I'll ask Ss the following questions: What do you do? Are you happy with your current job? Are you looking for another job? How long have you been working as a/an...?

Gist and Intensive Task (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text

Gist: I'll show them three pictures and three short texts about these people and ask Ss what kind of work they think each of them would like to do and if they can think of a suitable job for them. Intensive task: I'll ask Ss to read the text, find, and underline the sentences that contain the present perfect continuous with for and since.

Clarification (11-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I'll give Ss a guide discovery form on Google Forms, and have them do the exercises (1 to 3) about meaning in pairs. OCFB CCQs: I'll model and drill the pronunciation, then I'll have Ss do the exercises (4 to 8) about form and pronunciation in pairs. OCFB CCQs: I'll elicit the pron and form more systematically, like word and sentence stress, connected speech, and contraction...

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I'll ask Ss to do the task individually, then check answers with their partners.

Free Practice (10-11 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I'll have a Find Someone Who activity.

Feedback and Delayed Error Correction (4-5 minutes) • To provide a content-related feedback and some correction of their production.

I'll praise the Students for some good language, ask Ss to report back what they've found about their partner, comment about it, and provide a DEC at the end.
