Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice using expressions related to money in the context of using money in daily life.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T shares screen and presents Jamboard. T asks Ss to answer the 2 questions on the Jamboard. 1. "What is money for?" 2. "How important is money?"

Text-work (gist) (2-3 minutes) • To provide a model of the task and highlight useful words and phrases

T shares screen and projects Jamboard. T asks Ss to read the dialogue in less than 1 min then asks "Is this people's experience with money positive or negative? Why would you say so?"

Intensive Task (3-5 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

T tells Ss "The speakers mention a few expressions related to money. 1 has been highlighted and bolded for you. Find 5 more." T hears Ss opinions and tells Ss whether answers are correct. 1. make ends meet 2. manage your money 3. go overdrawn 4. allow a certain amount of money for 5. get paid 6. withdraw money from

Language Analysis (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the task language

Meaning: Match expressions to the correct synonym. Form: categorise part of speech. Both these tasks will be completed using a Google Form. Ss work in BORs for about 4 min and complete the Google Form together to clarify meaning. Ss stay in BORs to continue working on controlled practice.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To provide students with practice of the task language

T keeps Ss in BORs to work on controlled practice. When Ss return, T checks answers with Ss and provides relevant feedback. Pronunciation (this is covered now in order to prepare Ss for freer practice): Stress at sentence level. T provides a couple of examples from the dialogue to clarify that stress falls on nouns and verbs (content words) instead of prepositions and pronouns (grammar words)

Freer practice (8-10 minutes) • To practice fluency (meaning and pronunciation) when using expressions related to money

T will divide Ss into BORs for them to practice the expressions learnt during the lesson. Each pair of Ss will be given a quote about money and they will have to discuss the meaning of the quote using the new expressions and whether the agree with it or not.
