Main Aims

  • The main aim is to train students to read for different purposes, such as gist, specific information, and details. I will teach them some vocabulary as well to be able to speak about this subject.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To encourage clever guessing and help them to apply critical thinking to be able able to complete the in-class activities.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will try to personalize this stage to make them interested in the topic. I will use pictures to achieve this aim. They will be sent into breakout rooms to answer some questions related to their personal lives.

Pre-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will give them a PTV activity in the form of matching to eliminate any blockers to the understanding of the text. They will do it in breakout rooms.

While-Reading (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks.

They will read the text for the first time individually to answer some general questions. It is a top-down approach to the text to develop their skimming skills. They will check their answers in groups.

While-Reading #2 (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks.

They will reread the text in order to locate some specific information to answer some fill-in-the-gaps questions. I will help them to enhance the skill of scanning.

While-Reading #3 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading tasks.

They will revisit the text to summarize parts of it. They will work in groups, and each group will be given part of the text to summarize.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They will be divided into two groups to hold a debate. Each group will try to come up with reasons to support their argument and challenge the other group. One group will be pro-technology, while the other will be anti-technology.

Post-Reading (9-7 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

They will play a game in order to practice the vocabulary that they have learned.
