Description

In this lesson, students learn a new story; The ginger bread man through visual aid (Reading + Video). Followed by solving some worksheets about the story. Finally, there will be some controlled practice followed by free practice.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about the ginger bread man in the context of of learning the story line and how can the students sequence it.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide deduction reading practice using a text about the ginger bread man in the context of of understanding the story line and how it is sequenced.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be a shown a 4 minute video with the gingerbread man story.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

After watching the story the students will be asked in groups to draw from memory the important parts of the story.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to the story while reading it. While listening they will be handed a worksheet in which they will write the beginning/middle/end of the story.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In pairs students will re-read the story while reading it. While reading it they will be asked to solve a worksheet of the story elements.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

First the students will be given a comprehension questions worksheet. After if there is enough time the teacher will end the session with a bamboozle game about the gingerbread man story.
