Description

In this lesson, Ss will have practised how to make predictions in the context of future society. After the lead-in, they will try to identify some predictions in a text. After another group activity where they are asked to order some predictions from least likely to most likely, the T will clarify the TL. They will be given a number of predictions to which they will add some phrases to express their thoughts about their likelihood then they will write their own predictions on some topics.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of predictions in the context of Future society

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice in the context of various topics(famous people, the weather, the rest of the lesson, etc.)

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Put a picture of a futuristic city and tell them that last time we talked about society and changes what about we talk about the future in for example 50 years from now? So we are making p_____! ( elict the word predictions)

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Pre-teach vocab: Commercial: show them a commercial and ask what we call it Breed: put picture and elict that it's controlled reproducing. CCQs: What are these? Animals Are they producing new dogs? -- Yes Give them text "Getting it right" Instruction: Ask them to underline 6 predictions (Scan reading so no more than 1 minute). ICQs: What are you going to do? How many predictions are you going to underline? Are you going to read word by word? Give answer key. Ask them if it's the only way to make predictions

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Give Ss the cut-up prediction phrases. Demonstration: do the first one as a whole class: "definitely won't". Instruction: ask them to work in groups (3 or more depending on number) and to order them from least to most likely. ICQs: Are you going to work individually? Give answer key.

Clarification (5-7 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Meaning: ICQs: Are we talking about the past, the present or the future? -- The future Are these facts? -- No Do we know if they're going to happen or not? -- Don't know Form (Use projector): Elicit form by asking about: Will probably/probably won't => will + adverb / adverb + won't may/might => modals is/are likely => is/are (not) likely (Ask about the negative form) Pronunciation: (Drill and back-chain) I will probably get a good grade. I might go out tonight. Tomorrow is likely to be hot.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give Ss the handouts and ask them to fold them. Tell them that they will use the phrases from the previous activity to express what they think about the assumptions. Demonstration: T-S: All housework will be done by robots => S: All housework will <insert phrase> be done by robots. S-S: Ask about another phrase their opinion. Instruction: ask Ss to discuss and to work in pairs. ICQs: Are you going to write? Are you going to speak? Are you going to work in groups?

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Ask Ss to flip the paper and give them papers. Instruction: ask Ss to work in pairs and write 3-4 predictions about each topic. ICQs: Are you going to work in groups?

Feedback • Provide delayed feedback for the students after freer practice

Write on the board the mistakes (if there are any) and correct them with the whole class and sayonara o/"
