Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing a short email to catch up with a friend

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of language use to write an email to a friend
  • To produce an informal email in the context of catching up with a friend

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Ask students: How do you stay in touch with friends that are far away? Students will give different options since nowadays there is a lot more technology they might not say email, in this case, ask them: Have you ever used an email to get in touch with your friends?

Exposure (5-6 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Share with students a g form with the email and ask students to read and answer if the email is formal or informal. 1 min ICQ: are you going to read? How much time do you have to read and submit? Share g slides with students with the same email and try to elicit the parts of an informal email from them. This mail is highlighted with different colors that represent the different parts on an email. Questions, How do you think the email starts with ? Which one do you think is an opening line How do yo call the paragraph were we express the main idea? How do we end the email?

Useful Language (5-6 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Share with student jamboard, for the activity, students will place the phrases in the correct column. 3 min ICQ: how much time do you have? 3min are you going to write or move the phrases to the correct column? Check the answers in the Open class Share with students g slides and check grammatical breakdown. Pronunciation: read the sentence from students and ask if intonation goes up or down

Productive Task(s) (15-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Ask students to: Write a letter to a friend that they have not seen in a long time, and tell them at least 2 things that you have done lately. Show students a google slide with an example of a written email as a model. Share with students a google doc with their names for them to work on Time for activity 10-15 min ICQ: Are you going to read or write? Are you going to write a formal or informal email? Are you going to write to a friend?

Feedback and Error Correction (6-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

Set up break-out rooms for students to work in groups with the checklist provided check each other's letters and see if they have all the parts of an informal email. time 5 min, back to Open class ask how they did and try to provide some good use of language and some error correction.
