In this lesson, students will see the present continuous and review the present simple as well, to show the difference between these two tenses

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, practice and review of The present continuous and the present simple in the context of clothes
  • To provide clarification on the present continuous tense and comparing it with simple present tense in the context of

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide a gist listening to three recorded audio about asking questions. and to provide a freer speaking practice

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher asks one of Ss and say: “Please stand up and walk”, and says “He is walking”, then T asks two other sts ”Please speak with each other”, and say: “They are speaking”, and finally T says: “I am teaching”. T tries to elicit from the sts "this is what's happening now"

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language (present continuous) by listening

T sticks pictures of people doing things and asks ss to work with a partner to say what those people are doing then ss listen to track 13.4 to check their answers followed by FB.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T writes "two marker sentences" "Dave's driving to london", "Amy'sq sending an email to her mother." on the WB from the listening record to set the target language of the lesson. Marker sentences help learners understand the structure. T asks the sts to read the sentence out loud

Clarification (6-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language (present continuous)

T asks sts to read the marker sentence and then draws a timeline and elicits where on the timeline the sentence occurs to show the meaning, the answer should be (right now), T underlines to be verb and V+ing, shows the form under the marker sentences: Dave's driving to London. They're playing golf in the rain. S +am/are/is+verb+ing .... Drill for pronunciation Write on the board: present continuous or simple present? Ss complete <-------------------------------------|-------------------------------------------> Past Present Future Teacher CCQs then speaks about the difference between the present continuous & the present simple

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T gives sts ex. 5 p99 to complete the sentences with the present continuous or the present simple T asks to work individually using the contracted forms for 5 mins then pair check for 2 mins. Teacher monitors. After the whole-class checking, the teacher gives the answer keys.

Semi-Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T focuses on the first pair of sentences and elicit the correct one (I'm wearing a blue shirt today) Sts continue working individually to choose the correct sentence for 6 mins, teacher monitors, then pair check before the checking with the WC

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T gives sts 1 min to think about 5 different people in their families or friends to talk about what they are doing (now) and what they do in their daily routine, then T models the task by bringing two ss to the front and ask them to talk about those people, Teacher makes sure that Ss model very well. Then T asks them to mingle and do the same as the model (talk about five people, what they're doing now and what they do in their life), T gives clear ICQs, monitors and error-corrects.
